I am becoming a PE Geek! Not the technology type of PE Geek, though that is definitely part of my geek-ness. I mean the Wikipedia definition:
Geek- Often considered as a pejorative, the term can be used self-referentially without malice or as a source of pride. Its meaning has evolved to connote "someone who is interested in a subject (usually intellectual or complex) for its own sake."
I find myself thinking P.E. all of the time. Not with the focus on the activities that I will use but on how to foster and assess true learning in my classroom. Therefore, during my first National SHAPE Convention, I found myself shying away from activity sessions and drawn to curriculum, assessment, and common core sessions.
Bonnie Mohnsen’s session focused on the new standards and how to develop units within the curriculum to make sure they address all of the standards and benchmarks. I know- sounds pretty dry, right! That’s why I am beginning to think of myself as a geek- and proud of it!
I am excited by my new National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education book! I can’t wait to dive in and make sure that my lessons are aligned with the new standards and benchmarks at each grade level. I’m truly looking forward to seeing the schematic that will represent the scope and sequence of my
K-4 program. More importantly, I look forward to seeing my students grow and evolve into physical literate individuals.
Thank you Bonnie! If there are other Geeks out there, visit Bonnie’s site http://www.pesoftware.com/. She has some great products and she does presentations and workshops.
