The Star of the Game- Students were asked to fill in the blanks of a story with the proper parts of speech.  The story is told through the eyes of the student's favorite type of sporting equipment.  Great way to infuse academic vocabulary.  You can download the form here:

Healthy Hearts- These healthy heart avatars teach  healthy food choices to students.  Each student avatar has a heart shape with a picture of a healthy food choice in the center.

The Combination to a Healthy Life- The idea for this bulletin board came from a article in the Naples News
The combination is:
1- hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity
10- hours of sleep (ages 7-12 webmd)
2- hours maximum screen time per day
5 - servings of fruits and vegetables
0- sugary drinks

Feed Your Hippo! Your hippocampus is the part of the brain responsible for new learning.  Research is showing that aerobic exercise increases the size of your hippocampus.  This bulletin board will have pictures of students performing cardiovasular endurance exercises.
Pokemon Go! This year our theme is Pokemon Training.  Our 4th graders will be training their Pokemon to become physically literate!  They will each get to create their own trainer avatar and choose a Pokemon to train.  The Pokemon are learning "Exercise makes you strong, exercise helps your brain grow, and exercise makes you happy."

Check back for more bulletin boards throughout the year!

Literate in Physical Literacy- This bulletin board is in the hallway right where every class has to stop.  Each week a question will be highlighted and students can fill out an answer slip and submit it to our PE Smart drawing at the end of the week. The crossword puzzles can be found here.  Simply download the puzzle and input it into an excel document and stretch it to poster size. You may need to take a screen shot, crop it, and save as a picture before inputting into the excel doc.  If you have problems converting it, contact me and I will walk you through it.  Administrators love to see that you are working on academic vocabulary!

Social Networking- This bulletin board is for our 4th grade graduation.  Our mascot is a dolphin.  Instead of a Twitter board we made a Flipper board.  Each student received a cut out dolphin.  On the dolphin they wrote their @username.  They also got two index cards to write their "flips" on. One card was to write to their friends on.  The other card was used to write a note to a staff or faculty member that impacted their life during their years at Southdown.
Jeopardy SLO Review- With the end of the approaching, we are reviewing for our post SLO.  Each year we find some way to do a school wide review.  This year the 4th grade is playing Jeopardy.  Each day a student from each of the four 4th grade classes will come to the main office for morning announcements.  I ask a question and the first student to "ring in" gets to answer.  Students get a parting gift for playing.
Southdown Strong- This bulletin board was put up for our family fitness and nutrition night.  On the left and right are the definitions of physical and health literacy.  On the front of each folder are questions that relate to the components of health & skill related fitness, physical activity requirements, and nutrition guidelines.  Inside the folder are the answers. I find that anytime you can make a bulletin board interactive, the students and/or parents will actually read and process the information.  At the top of the board are two of our student super hero avatars.  Putting the students on the bulletin board also helps insure that they will be viewed.
Picture
Southdown Comics- The Southdown Comics are a part of our Super Hero theme.  This bulletin board is in our cafeteria.  The lesson of the comic strip is making healthy breakfast choices.  The villains, Dawn the Donut and Chocolate Cheat were designed by the students.  They are convincing these girls to put chocolate milk in Choco Puffs and to grab a donut for breakfast.  Our Super Heroes are helping them chose options in our cafeteria with less sugar and fat.  The faces have been replaced with cartoons for student protection. On the actual bulletin board they student faces are included.

PE Password- My good friend Margaret Robelee invented the PE Password.  The idea is that a secret password is placed inside a folder and students have to look inside to find out what the password is.  Margaret places her folders around the building. Mine are in the cafeteria.  In my folders there is a picture and three words - the students have to look at the picture and figure out what the password is.  It's a great way to reinforce PE academic vocabulary.  For may students, I will have them write down the password and put their answer in a jar and have a raffle at the end of each week.

4th Grade Graduation Bulletin Board- "Your off to great places, Today is your day!  Your mountain is waiting, So...get on your way!  Dr. Suess-I posted this bulletin board in the hallway to celebrate our 4th graders moving up.  On their twitter bird, they wrote where their mountain would take them.  One students said they would become a PE teacher!  Thanks for the quote Rachel Atzert @responsivePE.

Are you Smarter than a 4th Grader-At the end of each year, our students take an SLO (Student Learning Objective) assessment.  As a means of reviewing for the assessment, each morning a 4th grade student comes to the front office and plays "Are You Smarter than a 4th Grader" against our principal Mr. Oshrin.  I ask a question over the school intercom and the contestant that buzzes in first gets to answer.  If he/she is incorrect the other contestant gets to answer.  The questions span the 2nd-4th grade curriculum.  The student volunteer names are put in a hat and the contestants are chosen at random.  The final score this year was 100- 70 in favor of the 4th graders.

Growing Respectful, Responsible Southdown Citizen- I believe in the "It takes a village philosophy."  Therefore, if I see a need to educate students about citizenship outside my classroom, I will certainly take the opportunity to try to make a difference.  I created this bulletin board for the cafeteria.  For some reason, it had become commonplace to throw wrappers on the floor!  The students where not being polite to the cafeteria workers and their sportsmanship at recess can always use improvement.  On this board, if they clean up after themselves, Mr. Scott the custodian will start growing into an apple tree.  If the students say please and thank you, the cafeteria staff will grow into corn and if they show good sportsmanship the recess aides will become beautiful flowers.  We took a field trip from PE into the cafe to teach the students about the expectations of a good citizen.  Each Friday, I check with the staff to see how we did.  Before you know it, we will be a 4 star restaurant and a beautiful garden!

Picture
Skip Count Challenge-The principal asked me to organize the closing event for Math Night.  Because we have been skip counting in class whenever numbers are involved, I decided to create a challenge.  I enlisted our nurse's son to demonstrate a different exercise for each number group and made a video. (Skip Count Challenge video) We performed the video with the students and introduced the challenge.  We will use the video as a warm-up for the next two weeks.  After that, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate which level they have accomplished.  Each level has two number groups in it-1 & 10's, 2 & 5's, 3 & 4's, 6 & 7's, 8& 9's.  I will visit their classroom during indoor recess or make a station during our next unit to assess them.  Their name and/or picture will go on this bulletin board outside the gym.

Picture
Don't Be a Litter Bug- Created this bulletin board for the cafeteria. Trying to teach our students personal responsibility.  It might look like I am an artist but the truth is I cheat.  Simply make a photo copy of the pictures that you want to use on a transparency. Project the transparency and trace the pictures and paint. This illustrations are from Bugs and Bubbles my volley skills book.

Picture
Ziny's Driving School- This bulletin board is an extra credit writing assignment for our 4th grade students during our spatial awareness unit.  In this unit the students are moving through the solar system using different locomotor skills (see http://www.lepeinc.com/zinys-driving-school.html)  We discuss interval training, heart rate and moving to open space during these lessons.  The contest is as follows: You are a reporter writing about a new planet that has been discovered.  Describe the planet's environment and it's inhabitants.  Write about how they move for exercise and entertainment. Be sure to use descriptive words and movement vocabulary.  The space ships are painted using clipart, a transparency and an overhead projector.  The students in the spaceships are winners of one of our many internet or bulletin board contests.  The winner wrote about Dance Planet where the inhabitants do a different dance every day and their bodies are made of musical instruments!

Picture
Moving Across America- I received a grant two years ago from the Suffolk Zone for Movbands.  Movbands are wrist worn accelerometers.  I am presently using them with a third grade class to travel virtually across America to visit some great P.E. classrooms.  When we arrive at the schools, we will have a video conference with one of their classes. We plan on having some kind of demonstration for each visit.  We will also be sending postcards to our parents at each stop.  This is the bulletin board I created to display our travels. The colored spots highlight an interesting food, fact, fun or fitness event that takes place in each spot.  Because this bulletin board is in our cafeteria, I wanted to make it informational to all the students and not just the class that is traveling.  We are visiting Jim Deline in Texas, Lynn Burrows in Colorado, Mike Graham in Illinois, and Joe McCarthy in Minnesota.

Picture
Word Quilts- This bulletin board used to be MR. FRANK SAYS (see below) but Mr. Frank got a promotion and left us- so the board became MY TEACHER SAYS.  As you can see, I have taken a picture of one of our classroom teachers and super-imposed it on a clipart character.  Next to the picture we will be putting up our unit Word Quilt.  I got the idea from Aaron Hart from the US Games website http://blog.usgames.com/.  A word quilt is a word, it's definition, antonym, synonym, translation in Spanish and French, and the word used in a sentence.  The picture and word will change weekly.

50 Reasons to Exercise- Submitted by @Maury Health & PE on Twitter.  The goal of this bulletin board is to have the students and community read the benefits that are related to exercise and inspire them to move.

I plan on making this bulletin board in my school by brainstorming the reasons with the students and maybe posting articles that support the reasons.

Thanks Maury Health & PE

Picture
Physical Education Goals-  this bulletin board is outside our gym.  It lists the NASPE goals in elementary language so that I can talk with the students our goals during the first week of school.  The board will stay up through Back to School Night so that the parents will get the point as well.  We can also talk about the word goal and how it has meaning in sports as well as in our personal lives.
1. Learn how to move.
2. Understand how movement works.
3. Demonstrate a fit and healthy lifestyle.
4. Demonstrate responsible social behavior.
5. Understand the importance of movement.

Picture
Nutritional Ingredients - this bulletin board is in our cafeteria.  Each week I will change the question.  Students will read the nutritional labels and answer the question on an exit slip.  At the end of the week, correct answers will go into a hat and a winner will be awarded a trinket.  Some of these cereals are served at breakfast.  I want the students to be able to identify the serving size, calories, and sugar amounts to determine which is the more healthy option.

Pizza Rubric
- this is a bulletin board I am planning for this up coming school year.  I hope it will help the students understand how to self assess.

Level 1 - represents that the child has the ingredients to put together the skill but hasn't had success yet.
Level 2- represents the child that is beginning to put the skill together but is missing a key ingredient.
Level 3- represents the child that has the skill basics.  I usually describe this student as though they have all the cues down but it might look mechanical.
Level 4- represents the child that shows a little extra.  For basic skills, I usually describe this as mechanically correct and fluent or forceful depending on the skill.

I plan on using an excel document so that I can print the whole picture out as a bulletin board and laminate it so that I can write on it for each new skill.  The older students will be able to brainstorm the skill cues for level one and then help develop levels 2- 4.

Buddy the Blood Cell Gets Circulating
This bulletin board teaches the students how blood carries oxygen through the circulatory system and drops it off at the muscles to be used for exercise.  The students then travel through the circulatory system in the gym on their scooters.

Jeopardy

In preparation for the student learning objective assessments, we are reviewing as a school by playing jeopardy each morning.  Mrs. Marino, our principal, and Mr. Murphy, our building aide, are the contestants.  The categories are; Food Groups, Name that Muscle, Which Component of Fitness is it?, and How is it measured?  I ask the question over the intercom while the contestants hum the Jeopardy theme in the background. They buzz in when they know the answer.  If they don't know the answer, classrooms can buzz the front office to give the answer.  The first class to get it correct can choose who to give the points to.  Even our K-1 students are able to answer some questions!  One first grade teacher pulled out an action figure toy to show her students where the abdominal muscles were!

Picture
Jump Rope Chants

Our principal is retiring.  We had our students write jump rope chants for her.  That is her head on a cartoon of a jump roper.  She loved it and our students enjoyed the writing assignment.  "Mrs. Marino is the best! She can really rock a sweater vest!  When she leaves many tears will be dropping.  How many tissue will we need for mopping?"

Picture
Teaching Muscle Groups
Students can answer the question of the week on our website to get entered into our model contest.  If a student answers the question correctly, their name is put in a hat.  At the end of the week we pull a name out and take their picture.  Their picture is turned into a full size photo that we use for muscle groups, skill posters, etc.  To make a full size poster simply paste the picture into an Excel document and drag it to the size you want.  I would suggest using black and white though!  This took a lot of ink!

Fill the Bucket
This bulletin board is in our cafeteria.  The theme of filling the bucket is based on the story "How Full is Your Bucket?" by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer.  Essentially, the story is about kindness and happiness.  Students learn that being kind is like filling someones bucket- making them happy, and being unkind dips into the bucket-making someone sad.  Our cafeteria and recess monitors give out splashes for our bucket daily for acts of kindness that we identify to them at the beginning of the month.  Each month has a different splash.  As you can see, this month is shamrocks.  Last month was hearts. You get the idea!

Picture

The Legend of Milo and the Calf
This bulletin board teaches the overload principle for muscular strength through the Legend of Milo of Croton.  Students that answered the question of the week on our eboard got their picture taken doing muscular strength exercises and activities.  During this unit we used Therabands to teach muscle groups and muscular strength.
Picture
Vocabulary Word of the Week
I put a new PE vocabulary word on a bulletin board in the hallway each week.  One day, our custodian Frank, commented on the dullness of my board!  I hated to admit he was right! This was how I fixed it! The kids love Mr. Frank and each week I change his voice bubble.  He doesn't know it yet but next month he will be wearing a leotard in a yoga position.

Picture
Shoe Tying Tree
Tired of tying shoes! The shoe tying tree is the answer.  Cut out sneakers or leaves and give one to each student that can tie their shoe. Use old sneakers for a practice station in the gym, at recess or any other time the children have free.  Upload a shoe tying video from Youtube to put on your website, PTA Facebook page, eboard.

Picture
Physical Activity Postcards
Promote moderate to vigorous physical activity outside your gymnasium with physical activity postcards.  Students bring in pictures showing activity.  On the postcard they write who is in the picture, what activity they are doing, and where it takes place.

Picture
Monthly Fitness Calender
For the month of January, we are highlighting muscular strength and endurance.  On this calendar, we are teaching that students need to do push-ups and planks three times a week to increase strength and endurance.  At the end of the month we will do a post test to see how if there was in increase in strength and endurance.  This calender is on our eboard as well.

Picture
Components of Fitness
The top row of this bulletin board states the components of fitness.  The second row defines the component in elementary language.  The third row depicts exercises to increase fitness levels in each area and the bottom row depicts which assessment is used to test the child's level of fitness in class.  *Skinfold measurements are discussed but not used at the primary level.
