Session Title: Literacy Physical Education
Literacy Physical Education is a program designed to help a specific grade level that is behind, based on the state wide reading assessment to each grade level standards. Our data shows that students who are in our 12 week class will more than double their peers and up to five the national average on the winter assessment. Students come to the gym every day, fifteen minutes for 12 weeks. Every class embeds fluency, comprehension and spelling into movement activities. Students in this class learn how to combat “learned helplessness” by the end of the 12 weeks. Students will use whiteboards, markers and towels as their learning tools. This class has implemented into grades 2 – 6.

Session Title: Huff and Puff Your Way to Better Behavior and Academics
This session is designed to demonstrate how movement and physical education can change the culture of your school. Learn from national speaker and award winning Minnesota physical education teacher, Joe McCarthy, on how his school has used fitness to positively influence math and literacy assessment scores, learning, academic achievement and student behavior. Joe and his team analyzed their state assessment scores, took the lowest scoring readers in second through sixth grade, and gave them physically active math and literacy lessons that were integrated into PE class. As a result of their efforts, these students showed a three-fold growth in achievement on their reading assessment scores! Walk away with examples of the lessons that were used, and gain a renewed sense of how physical activity can improve academic learning when it is integrated into the culture of your school.
